CHINA. State of Chu. "Miao" Gold Cube Money, ND (ca. 475-221 B.C.). Warring States Period. EXTREMELY FINE.
Hartill-5.6. Weight: 10.36 gms. Made in what is now Hubei province, the "cube money" types were cut from larger bars which allowed for the making of small denominations. According to Hartill (pg. 79), the obverse inscription on this piece is "uncertain", yet more recently, scholars have attributed the character as "Miao". While all "cube money" can be considered rare, this type appears to be VERY RARE, with few examples seen. A significant and collectible item as such, as this piece qualifies as a nearly impossible-to-find variety of what is historically China's first gold currency with a fixed shape and size.
Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
