JAPAN. Kaga. Fantasy Silver Nan Ryo (10 Ryo), ND (ca. Late 19th Century). VERY FINE.
170.34 x 92.14 mm. Weight: 159.70 gms. An interesting type less encountered than the ovoid types. All of the fantasy issues are the direct result of Commodore Perry opening Japan for trade. The aftermath of Commodore Perry saw a mass exodus of gold from the country, which resulted in fantasies such as the present piece being made for collectors who were interested in East Asian numismatics. This example, richly toned throughout, depicts a type that never existed, firmly remaining as a collector's novelty, but with fascinating numismatic affiliations.
Estimate: $200.00- $400.00
