Although we have filed this under the Netherlands East Indies, this type was actually minted in England and issued by the British East India Company. Local forces under Stamford Raffles, among others, conquered the Dutch holdings during the Napoleonic Wars. These were returned to the Netherlands by the terms of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Raffles went on to found the city of Singapore.
