INDONESIA: JAVA: Anonymous, AV mas (24 krisnala), 8th-10th Centuries, Mitch-SEA 723, Wicks-100, Medang Kingdom issue, Devangari character // incuse lingam, Fine, S. The Medang or Mataram Kingdom was a Javanese Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished between the 8th and 10th centuries. It was based in Central Java, and later in East Java. Established by King Sanjaya, the kingdom was ruled by the Sailendra Dynasty. This is the earliest evidence of a currency system in Java in the form of gold mas or tahil ingots struck circa the 9th century. Golden artifacts discovered in 1990 in the Wonoboyo hoard revealed gold coins in shape similar to corn seeds, which suggests that the 9th century Javan economy was partly monetized. The surface of the gold coins is engraved with a script "ta", a short form of "tail" or "tahil", a unit of currency in ancient Java.

Estimate: 150-200 USD
