MALTA: Emmanuel Pinto, 1741-1773, AR 6 tari (6.71g), ND, Cr-12, Schembre-210/4, unlisted in Restelli and Fursè, 28mm medallic 6 tari, crowned arms with PINTO.M.M.HS.S - F.EMMANVEL around // St. John the Baptist holding banner with paschal lamb laying below with NON - SVRREXIT MAIOR around all, plain edge, VF, R. This coin type is usually referred to in the literature as a chip. The relatively frequent occurrence in circulated quality speaks for a regular coinage. The average weight of the pieces corresponds to a value of about 6 to 7 tari. Since 6 tari pieces had already been minted in the same weight under Vilhena and Despuig, a value of 6 tari (1/2 scudo) is to be assumed. This classification is supported by the comments made by Zanobio Paoli in 1763, who recommended to Grandmaster Pinto that coins worth 30, 15 and 6 tari should continue to be minted, but since there is no other coinage from Pinto at 6 tari, Paoli must have referred to these pieces.
