The Dutch leeuwendaalder was one of the most popular silver coins used in international trade for almost two centuries. It circulated in North America where it gave the name 'dollar' to similar sized coins, and in eastern Europe where it gave the name to the currencies of Romania and Moldova (leu), of Albania (lek), and of Bulgaria (lev). "Leu", "lek" and "lev" also mean "lion" in their respective languages.
