George V gold Sovereign 1923-SA MS66 PCGS, Pretoria mint, KM21, S-4004, Marsh-287 (R6). Mintage: 406. A wonder coin; one of the rarest Sovereigns of the 20th century, preserved in the most glorious untouched state and with unbelievable eye appeal, a trifecta of numismatic magnificence. Fully Prooflike with watery reflective surfaces, every element of the strike perfectly rendered, deep splashes of pale cobalt and vivid red punctuating the fields and creating a sublime aesthetic effect. This very coin represents perhaps the most significant example of the type extant, judging from its description when it was offered in the Millennia Collection sale, May 2008. 1923 was the first year Sovereigns were struck in South Africa, and this Sovereign is supposedly one of the first four struck at Pretoria, gifted to the then mintmaster of the Bombay Mint Raoul Kaman. In the 1990s, two of these were bought for the celebrated Terner collection, one of which graded as MS65 - and this very specimen, graded MS66, was the other. As such, it could feasibly be the very finest to remain. We offered an MS66 Prooflike example in our January 2013 sale, but that piece was catalogued as 'not being prooflike at all', and bore one or two prominent copper spots. To the cataloguer, this present offering appears far superior, and in-hand inspection is wholly recommended for a full appreciation of its outstanding quality. A Sovereign befitting only the very finest of collections.
