Proctorsville, Vermont, Bank of Black River, $50 front proof, 18XX (mid 1800s), rare. Haxby-VT-185 G14P. This artistic proof was produced by Danforth, Spencer, and Hufty of New York for the Bank of Black River in Proctorsville, Vermont. Information about the bank is as rare as the notes are; a few issued examples of lesser denominations dated to 1846 have appeared on the market in the last two decades. Several female vignettes run across the note: a draped Columbia with a Phrygian cap on a pole and a shield stands next to an eagle while two women (one holding a cornucopia while the other grasps a sextant) look at an angelic figure. VF proof printed on india paper and mounted on cardstock with both upper corners torn but only barely reaching the note design itself, a vertical fold in the center shows some internal tearing near the cashier's signature line, with a few small spots of toning and staining confined to the margins, six small punch out cancellations (as made) running across the signature lines.
