San Jose, Costa Rica, Banco de Costa Rica, 5 colones, 1-1-1901, series A, serial 042422, PMG VG 8, finest and only example in PMG census, rare. Astua p. 208; SCWPM-S173a. Extremely rare as an issued example and a key rarity of early Costa Rican paper money; in Historia de los Billetes de Costa Rica, Astua writes that only a dozen examples are known today. The Standard Catalog notes its existence but leaves it unpriced at any level. This well-circulated survivor has a RETIRADO punch hole cancellation across the face and a registration overprint on the reverse; the upper left corner is removed, and ink colors are somewhat faded but still visible with clear serial number and signatures.
