Set of three USA (New Orleans mint) Seated Liberty half dollar, NGC Shipwreck Effect / SS Republic, in wooden box: United States issue, 1860-O; Louisiana issue, 1861-O, die W-08, (C ) UNC; Confederate States issue, 1861-O, die W-14, (C ) UNC, bisected date error. KM-A68. Nicely assembled set of shipwreck coins illustrating the three different governments that controlled the striking of coins at the New Orleans Mint at the start of the Civil War: the United States of America up until January 26, 1861, the State of Louisiana from January 26 to March 21, and the Confederate States of America from March 21 until the silver supply ran out later in April. The 1860-O shows moderate surface corrosion but all details are visible while the Louisiana and Confederate 1861-O halves are choice with bright, original surfaces showing very little saltwater corrosion (better than the Shipwreck Effect C designation suggests). NGC #1831030-016, 1794158-219, 1793376-263. With booklet and original certificate from the salvagers and promoters listing the NGC numbers of each coin, all housed in an elegant wooden box with printed slipcase with DVD.Recovered from: SS Republic, sank in 1865 off Georgia
($1,500-$2,250)
