Mexico City, Mexico, 2 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer R (Gothic) at bottom between pillars, motto PLVS in rounded panel, very rare, NGC VF 35, ex-Potomac Collection and ex-Boyd/Guttag (both stated on label), Guttag and Nesmith Plate Coin. Nesmith-4; Cal-86; S-M1; KM-10. 6.64 grams. A later style of 2 reales with almost all Latin lettering, well struck with full legends and rich old toning (just a hint of doubling at top-left of shield), with long and important pedigree including its use (via tracing) as the No. 4 coin in Nesmith. NGC #4762849-003. From the Potomac Collection and pedigreed to the F.C.C. Boyd Collection (Superior auction of August 1975, with original lot-tag #1923), also Plate Coin #2424 in the Guttag collection as cataloged by Edgar H. Adams (1929) and (drawn) Plate Coin #4 in Nesmith's The Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City 1536-1572 (1955).
