Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (early 5th period?). S-P14; KM-5.1. 27.23 grams. Broad flan with nearly full legends, choice full shield (slightly doubled) and cross, bold P-B and denomination o-Viii, XF with some dark spots. The jury is still out in deciding where to place this issue chronologically, as the unique "alien-like" lions and simple-square castles (Sellschopp #269 and #280) do not match any other periods, and overall the style is more like 3rd period (commas in legend, finer details and broader flan) than 5th period. In the past we have diverged from the opinions of Sellschopp and Paoletti on this point, but clear examples like this one (with full denomination and style of lions matching other 5th-period issues) cause us to return to agreement with these venerable references, yet with the footnote that we can never really know where this unique design falls in the sequence.
