Potosi, Bolivia, medallic 1 melgarejo, 1865FP, PCGS AU58, ex-Whittier (stated on label). Burnett-95A1; Fonrobert-9676. Obverse with AL / VALOR / DEL / JENERAL / MELGAREJO inside 666. Ms. and 400. Gs. in small letters within legend GRATITUD DEL PUEBLO POTOSINO EN 1865.; reverse with military bust of Melgarejo inside legend AL PACIFICADOR DE BOLIVIA .F.P. Somewhat olive-colored obverse with rainbow splashes on reverse, no notable marks and only light high-point wear. While this Melgarejo series is medallic in axis, the appearance of assayer-marks FP on this type strongly support their issue as coins. Burnett (which we follow) and Fonrobert disagree as to which side is the obverse, and the latter calls this denomination "Boliviano" or "10 reales." PCGS #32906227.
