Bogota, Colombia, pillar 8 reales, Charles III, 1770VJ, very rare, PCGS MS65, finest graded in both censuses, Restrepo Plate Coin (stated on label). Yonaka-B8-70; Restrepo-44.2; KM-39; Cal-1199. Truly prooflike with bright, mirrorlike luster on fields and frosty, totally unblemished details, mostly sharp rims, very choice by anyone's estimation but notably the only MS65 over a handful of choice MS62-MS64 pieces at NGC (and a single MS64 at PCGS), all from the same group discovered in Bogota in the area of the foundation of the forgotten former location of the Nuestra Senora del Pilar convent, for whose dedication in 1770 these pillar dollars were supposedly specially struck (see our Auction 16, lot 752 for long explanation). PCGS #39225617. Pedigreed to the Nueva Granada Collection (stated on label), and Plate Coin on page 114 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012).
($35,000-$70,000)
