IONIA, Ephesos. Circa 370-350 BC. Æ (10mm, 0.92 g, 12h). Pythes, magistrate. Bee / Stag kneeling left, head right; astragalos above, ΠYΘHΣ name to left. SNG Copenhagen –; cf. SNG von Aulock 1838 (for type, but no magistrate or symbol). Green patina, small chip on obverse. VF. Unpublished with this magistrate.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection. Ex G. Hirsch 205 (22 September 1999), lot 1190 (part of).

According to Leschhorn, magistrates names ΠYΘHΣ are well attested in various minting periods at Ephesos (while being a very rare name elsewhere). However, his first recorded instance of the name is on a late tetradrachm in the straight-winged-bee series, which Kinns (Pixodarus) dates to circa 340-325 BC. Thus, this coin marks the earliest occurrence of this name on a coin at Ephesos.
