CAROLINGIANS. Louis 'le Pieux' (the Pious). As Emperor Louis I, 814-840. AR Denier (20mm, 1.43 g, 6h). Class 3. Unspecified (Orléans) mint. Struck 822/3-840. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP, cross pattée; pellets in quarters / XPISTIΛNΛ RELIGIO
, temple façade; chevron below. Coupland, Money Group E; Depeyrot 1179; M&G 482; MEC 1, –. Lightly toned. Good VF.

From the Simon Coupland Collection.

Group E coins are recognisable by the form of the temple and the lettering. The temple has short columns, often with capitals, and a 90° roof which sometimes has a ball at the base of the cross. The lettering is sprawling, often with a large S, unbarred As, often at angles, and the second I of religio sometimes sits in the angle of the L. The group (Coupland Group E) was first published in 1990, and the finds since then have only confirmed the attribution. Some coins have a chevron below the temple, as this one.. [S. Coupland]
