MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 425-390 BC. AR Trihemiobol (8mm, 0.39 g, 3h). Reduced standard. Olynthos mint. Laureate head of Apollo left / Laurel branch within incuse square. Psoma, Monnaies, p. 103; Robinson & Clement Type 2 (Trieros); HGC 3, 507. Toned, porosity. VF.
Until recently, because of the legend TRIH on the reverse, this tiny fraction was thought to have been struck at a mint in Trieros in Thrace. However, Psoma has convincingly argued that the inscription is in reference to the denomination, a trihemiobol, and placed its manufacture at Olynthos during the period of the Chalkidian League. There is an accompanying diobol with the legend ΔIOB on the reverse.
