*In 1799 the British Prime Minister William Pitt The Younger introduced an income tax of 2 shillings in every Pound (10%) to raise funds for the Napoleonic Wars. Across the English Channel, later in the year 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the French Directory in a coup d'etat which finally ended the French Revolution. And across the Atlantic Ocean, in December 1799 George Washington died at Mount Vernon, Virginia.
