THESSALY. Orthos. Circa 350-200 BC. Obol (?) (Silver, 12 mm, 1.13 g, 11 h). Head of Athena to right wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with the forepart of a sphinx. Rev. [ΟΡΘΙ] Trident within olive wreath tied below. BCD, etc. -, apparently unpublished. Only the third example known. For the others, struck from the same obverse die, see Gemini XIII, 2017, 37 and Gorny & Mosch 236, 2016, 177e. Good fine.

As pointed out in IACP, p. 698, the proper name of this city was Orthos, not Orthe as it is commonly given. According to BCD, who gently offered his assistance to us after we published the sale, the weight of this coin is inconsistent for an obol and it should be therefore considered as a Trihemiobol, regardless the fact that it shares the same obverse die with the other two known examples.
