LYDIA. Magnesia ad Sipylum. Antonine Period, 138-192. Assarion (Bronze, 20 mm, 5.89 g, 6 h), struck inder the strategos M. Oul. Metrodoros. EΠΙ CΤΡ Μ ΟYΛ ΜΗΤΡΟΔΩΡΟV Bearded head of mt. Sipylos (?) to right. Rev. ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ CΙΠVΛΟV Demeter standing facing, head to left, holding torch with her right hand and poppy with corn ear in her left. BMC 16. RPC online 2348. SNG Copenhagen 246. SNG München 232. Relatively scarce. Nearly very fine.
The die engraving on the reverse gives the impression that Demeter is cut in half. It is not clear whether this was intentional or the die cutter spent the previous night in a place where wine was plenty and low quality.
