Greek Coins. Croton
Nomos circa 440-430, AR 19 mm, 6.12 g. [koppa]PO Tripod with legs ending in lion's paws. Rev. Eagle flying r., incuse. SNG Ashmolean 1491. Historia Numorum Italy 2108 var.
An extremely rare issue, possibly the last incuse issue of Croton. Irregular narrow
flan, otherwise good very fine / about extremely fine
From a private European collection and privately purchased in 1980.
The style of the tripod and the diameter of the flan, which differs from the vast majority of the specimens known leads us to believe that this could possibly be the last incuse issue of the mint of Croton. The weight of the coin is extremely light, nevertheless the metal is excellent and the break on the edge of the coin does not show a bronze core.
