1ère pièce d’Egypte frappée par les Ottomans. Décentrée. Très bel exemplaire.
Selim I conquit l’Egypte en 923 de l’Hégire, chassant le dernier souverain mamelouk Tumanbay II. Il fit immédiatement frap per des monnaies à son nom. Ces monnaies restent cependant très proches des dernières émissions mameloukes, dans la mesure où elles furent produites par les mêmes graveurs. Il faudra ainsi attendre le règne de Sulayman I pour voir apparaître un monnayage d’un style clairement ottoman.
Salim I conquered Egypt in 923 h, deposing the last Burji Mamluk ruler Tumanbay II outside the walls of Cairo. He immediately began to strike coinage in his own name. This piece is clearly a product of Mamluk die-sinkers, and it was not until the next reign, that of Sulayman I, that the Ottoman style coinage was fully introduced.
