Ottomans. Suleyman II, AH 1099-1102. Sherifi Altyn AH 1099, Qustantiniyia. 3,40g. KM 99; NO 463.
By the time that the pathetic Sulayman II, who had spent his entire life confined to the kafes (cage), succeeded to the throne, the Ottoman coinage had fallen into a sad state of decline. The only gold mints of any consequence were located in North Africa in Egypt and Tunis. The gold coinage of the capital Qustantaniyya (Constantinople) is extraordinarily rare because of the lack of precious metal in the treasury. This extremely rare piece is lacking in most major collections of Ottoman coinage.
