INNO / CENTIVS· / ·PP·IIII·.Born Sinibaldo de' Fieschi, Pope Innocent IV ascended the Holy See during a time in which the lands held by the Papal states were contested by the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II. The situation got so dire that in 1244 Innocent had to flee Rome; in retaliation he had Frederick excommunicated. After the Emperor's death he was able to return to Rome. Innocent died during a campaign against Frederick's son Manfred, thus having opposed the Hohenstaufens his whole tenure as pope.Pb 41.0 mm. 46.09 g. Very fine +
