Kings of Macedon
Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.88 g, 1 h), struck posthumously, uncertain mint in western Asia Minor, c. 323-280. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on backless throne, holding eagle with closed wings on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, kantharos. Price 2719A. Very rare, nicely toned and of particularly bold style with a remarkably "emotional" portrait of Herakles. Extremely fine.
