Stratonikeia. Eumenes III (Aristonikos), pretender to the throne of Pergamon, 133-129 BC. Cistophoric Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 12.78 g, 1 h), E = year 5 = 129. Basket (cista mystica) from which snake coils; around, ivy wreath with fruits. Rev. Two snakes coiled around a bow case with, between the snakes heads, thunderbolt; to left and right within the snakes and under the bowcase, ΒΑ - ΕΥ; below, within one snake's coil, Ε; below, outside the snakes' coils, ΣΤ - ΡΑ. Kleiner & Noe Series 4 (dies 5/-). Robinson, Cistophori 14 (dies E/-). Extremely rare. Clear, sharp and attractive. Extremely fine.
Struck during the final months of the reign of Aristonikos, while he was besieged in Stratonikeia by the Roman general Marcus Perperna, consul in 130 BC. The city was starved into surrender and Aristonikos was captured, sent in chains to Rome, paraded through the city and then executed. As for Perperna, he did not live to gain a deserved triumph since he died of disease in Pergamon while he was on his way home in late 129.
