Dynasts of Lycia
Uncertain dynast, circa 470 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 9.72 g), uncertain mint in central Lycia. Dolphin leaping to left; above, tiara (or die fault?); below, exergual line of pellets. Rev. Triskelses in a square frame of pellets, all within a shallow incuse square. Apparently unpublished save for its appearance as Bank Leu 52, 1991, 102 (this coin). Dolphins appeared as types on the coins of the 5th century Lycian dynasts Kuprlli, Thap... and Zagaba (see Müseler III, 52). Of great rarity, toned, and with a powerful-looking dolphin. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection and from The Distinguished American Collection, Bank Leu 52, 15 May 1991, 102.
