Baktria and India
Greco-Baktrian Kingdom. Diodotos I, circa 255-235 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.36 g, 7 h), in the name of the Seleukid king Antiochos II, mint A, in the area of present-day Aï Khanoum. Diademed head of Antiochos II to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ANTIOXOY Zeus Bremetes, seen from behind, advancing to left; his extended left arm draped with an aegis, and preparing to hurl thunderbolt with his right hand; in inner left field, wreath above eagle standing left. Bopearachchi 1A. HGC 9, 234 (Antiochos II). Holt Series A, Group 8. SC 630. SNG ANS 75. Test cut on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Künker FPL 162, January 2002, 13.This coin has also been attributed to a Baktrian Antiochos Nikator: see J. Jakobsson, Antiochos Nicator, the Third King of Bactria?, NC 2010, pp. 17-33. The test cut on this coin, and those that appear on so many others of this type, were apparently applied in the mint itself, probably as a way of accomodating local tastes.
