Constantine IX Monomachus, 1042-1055. 2/3 Miliaresion (Silver, 24.5 mm, 2.10 g, 7 h), Constantinople. +H BΛΑΧEΡ-[ΝΙΤΙCA] /MP-ΘV Facing nimbate bust of the Theotokos of Blachernae, orans, wearing pallium and maphorium. Rev. --- / ΘKΕ Β'Θ' / KωNCTAN/TINω ΔΕC/ΠOTH Tω / MONOMA / - X, - in five lines, within a double linear border. DOC 8. SB 1835. Attractively toned, struck on a full flan, and with a fine depiction of the Virgin. Minor deposits as found, otherwise, extremely fine.

Blachernae was a northwestern suburb of Constantinople, famous for the church of St. Mary of Blachernae (Παναγία Βλαχερνίτισσα). It was built by the Empress Aelia Pulcheria, wife of Marcian, and was considered one of the most important churches of Constantinople; it was burnt down in 1434.
