Manuel I Comnenus, 1143-1180. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 31.5 mm, 4.25 g, 7 h), First coinage, Constantinople, 1143-1152 (?). IC XC / O EMMANOYHΛ (across the fields) Bust of Christ Pantokrator facing, wearing cross nimbus with pellet in each arm, his right hand raised in blessing and with book of Gospels held in his left. Rev. ΜΑΝVΗΛ - Δ?CΠΟΤ / ΜΡ On the left, Manuel, with a collar piece containing five jewels, standing facing, holding a labarum-headed scepter in his right hand and anexikakia in his left; on the right, the Virgin, standing facing, raising her right hand to crown the emperor. DOC 2b. SB 1957. An attractive example, toned and clear, struck on a particularly broad flan. Nearly extremely fine.
