Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Hyperpyron (Gold, 26 mm, 4.14 g, 6 h), Constantinople. Half-length facing figure of the Theotokos, orans, within the walls of Constantinople with six groups of towers. Rev. Fragmentary inscription On the left, St. Michael presenting the kneeling emperor to Christ, enthroned on right, holding scroll; between emperor and Christ, three pellets. DOC Class II, subclass a, siglum 2. SB 2242. A pleasant piece. Obverse double-struck, otherwise, about extremely fine.
