Nuremberg. "1530" (but actually 1730). Medal in the weight of 3 ducats (Gold, 30 mm, 10.47 g, 12 h), on the 200th anniversary of the Confession of Augsburg, by Daniel Siegmund Dockler and Peter Gottlieb Nürnberger and Paul Werner, dated 1530 in chronogram but struck in 1730. Three shields bearing the arms of Nuremberg; all within a circle of seven shields bearing the arms and initials of the seven city councilors then in office; below right, D (= Dockler). Rev. ANDENKEN/DER ZV AVGSPVRG/VBERGEBENEN/ BEKAEN TNVS/VND ERSTEN/BEKENNERE within a wreath of laurel, palm branches and the arms of seven of the signers of the Augsburg Confession, with their initials; below, on the border, N (= Nürnberger). Cf. Brozatus 1073, Erlanger 1108, Fischer/Maué 426 and Whiting 430 (all in silver). Apparently extremely rare and unknown. A fascinating and interesting piece. Some minor edge scrapes, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection acquired prior to 2000.We would like to thank Ruedi Kunzmann for his valuable comments and advice concerning this piece. This is quite an enigmatic coin: to our knowledge it is unknown in gold: Brozatus (Reformatio in Nummis [Osnabrück 2015]) only lists it in silver. While we tend to think that it is a modern 'restrike' or 'novodel-like' reproduction, the fabric and the edge do not look particularly recent. Thus, the possibility that this piece was struck in the 18th century cannot be excluded.
