Captain-General Marco Antonio Bragadin defended the city of Famagusta against the Ottoman forces of Sultan Selim II, who began an invasion of Cyprus in July 1570. Having held out for much longer than had been expected, his 6,000 men dwarfed by the 100,000 Ottoman soldiers armed with 1,500 cannon that besieged them, initially the Venetians were granted safe passage of the island. However, for Bragadin this was rescinded and he was flogged to death, his skin being presented to the Sultan in Istanbul.
