Ionia or Lydia, uncertain mint EL Hekte - 1/6 Stater. Circa 600-560 BC. Lydo-Milesian Standard. 'Schematic', linear outline of conjoined, roaring lions' heads / Double incuse punch with 'horse shoe' pattern. Linzalone 1067 var. (incuse pattern); Roma XVII, 2019, 511 & XVIII, 2019, 593 var. (same). 4.61g, 13mm.
Very Fine. Extremely Rare; possibly a unique variant.
From the inventory of a German dealer.
Whilst the obverse of this coin has been struck from worn dies, the design of the reverse punch is clear. This example exhibits two regular 'horse shoe' patterns in the reverse incuses whereas the only other known types (see Linzalone 1067) have one incuse pattern where a line emanates from the curve of the 'horse shoe', a form not dissimilar from the letter 'e'.
