ANCIENT COINS. GREEK. Sicily, Syracuse (second Democracy, 466-405 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm, 17.42g, 10h. Struck c.450-440 B.C. Charioteer, wearing a long chiton, holding the reins in both hands, driving a quadriga right, Nike flies above to left to crown the charioteer, ketos to right in the exergue. Rev. ΣYRAKOΣI-O-N, head of Arethusa facing right, wearing a pearl-diadem, earring and necklace, four dolphins swimming around (Boehringer 485 (V258/R347); SNG ANS 153 (these dies); Jameson 1909 (these dies)). Edge a little ragged in part, struck on excellent metal, residual lustre, extremely fine.
