ANCIENT COINS. GREEK. Sicily, Syracuse (second Democracy, 466-405 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm, 17.27g, 8h. Struck c.420-415 B.C. Charioteer, wearing a long chiton and holding a kentron and the reins, driving a quadriga right, Nike flies above to right to crown the horses, grasshopper (only lightly and partially visible) in the exergue. Rev. ΣY-PA-[KOΣION], head of Arethusa facing left, her hair bound with a cord wound five times around her head, and wearing an earring and necklace, two pairs of dolphins, facing each other, on left and right (K. Schefold, Meisterwerke Griechische Kunst, Basel (1960), 467 (this coin); Boehringer 728 (V360/R496); Tudeer, p. 99, 1 (these dies); Rizzo, pl. XL, 18 (these dies); Antikenmuseum Basel 453 (these dies); Kunstfreund 113 (these dies); SNG ANS 248 (these dies); Boston 397 (these dies)). A spectacular example of the most beautiful depiction of Arethusa from this period, a coin of outstanding early classical style coupled with a strong reverse strike on superb metal and a wonderful old cabinet tone, about extremely fine. An exceptional work of art. Very rare.
