ANCIENT COINS. GREEK. Sicily, Syracuse (second Democracy, 466-405 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm, 16.69g, 3h. Unsigned but by the artist Sosion, c.415 B.C. Charioteer, wearing a long chiton and holding a kentron in his right hand and the reins in his left, driving a fast quadriga left, Nike flies above to right to crown the charioteer, two dolphins swimming to right and left in the exergue. Rev. ΣYPA-KOΣIO-N, head of Arethusa facing left, her hair bound by an ampyx, and wearing an earring and necklace, four dolphins swimming around (Tudeer 5 (V2/R3); Rizzo, pl. XLII, 3 (these dies); BMC 154 (these dies)). Struck on a very broad flan, a virtually invisible light crack in flan, beautiful style, light iridescent tone, good very fine. An impressive coin.
Purchased from Monnaies et Médailles, Basel, 29 June 1983
The dies for this coin are clearly by the artist Sosion. The obverse die links to a coin with his signature and the head of Arethusa is similar in style to his other work.

Estimate: $10,000
