ANCIENT COINS. GREEK. Sicily, Syracuse, Hieron II (274-216 B.C.), Silver 16 Litrai, 13.58g, 12h. Struck c.218/7-214 B.C. Diademed and veiled head of Queen Philistis left, a torch on right. Rev. BAΣIΛIΣΣAΣ / ΦIΛIΣTIΔOΣ, Nike, holding the reins, driving a galloping quadriga left, E below horses (Pozzi 658 (these dies); McClean 2916, pl. 105, 11 (this reverse die); BMC 552). A virtually invisible light crack, beautiful style, wonderful golden and red iridescent cabinet tone, extremely fine. An extremely rare variety.
