Lower Canada. Banque du Peuple "Side View" Penny Token 1839 AU Details (Obverse Damage) NGC, KM-Tn17 (Rare), Br-525 (R4-1/2), LC-11C, Courteau-39 (R9), Robins-29460. Plain edge. Coin alignment. The undisputed key to the 'Side View' series, pairing the Bank of Montreal obverse legend with the Banque du Peuple ribbon reverse. Originally considered an error, scholars now believe it was deliberately struck by a manufacturer to serve as some sort of sample piece, and was thus never intended to be released into circulation. According to Charlton, fewer than 10 specimens are known today, with the Standard Catalog of World Coins stating that the figure may be fewer than 8 pieces and leaving it unvalued. This is only the second specimen we have been fortunate enough to offer, with the last, a remarkable AU53 Brown, bringing $10,200 as part of our last sale of the Doug Robins collection. While being noted as 'damage' on the holder, the obverse marking over the bank building almost seem like some sort of cancellation marks, though the other piece we offered did not have these markings.
