Philip III (1598-1621),cob 8 Reales, total weight of 35.97g (mount included), weight of the coin 26.40g (mentioned on the certificate), n.d., Potosi, assayer T, Grade 1, rev. quadrants of cross transposed: lion in 1 and 4 and tower in 2 and 3,
surrounded by a gold mount in 750/1000 gold, very fine. PROVENANCE: shipwreck of Nuestra Senora de Atocha which sank off the coast of Key West, Florida in 1622. With a photocopie of the certificate from Mel Fisher # 86A-134447 and an article about Mel Fisher and the treasure of the Atocha as well as a letter from the owner describing the story of this coin and how he acquired it. This coin was discovered by Frederick 'Rico' Ingerson, first diver of Mel Fisher, on the day he discovered the Emerald Cross from the same vessel. As a memento, he had the coin mounted as a pendant and wore it until 1998. He swapped it for a canon owned by antique dealers Karen et Jack from Portside Classics in Key Largo. This pendent-coin was bought in February 2000.
