MARC ANTONY. AR Denarius (3.53 gms), Patrae(?) Mint, 32-31 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.
Cr-544/12; CRI-386; Syd-1214. Legionary type. Obverse: Praetorian galley right; Reverse: CHORTIS SPECVLATORVM, three signa, each decorated with two wreaths and small galley. A VERY RARE type often encountered rather circulated, this piece presents some darker toning and overall clean, problem free surfaces.

The chortes speculatorum were a form of "spies" and "special ops" used in each legion. Antony created a special group to serve around him, and they performed vital tasks and offered extra protection--in essence, an early secret service. In addition to the many legionary denarii in the series, he had ones struck for these chortes as well.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
