Troas. Gergis. 350-300 BC. Æ (1.75g, 10h). BMC 9; SNG von Aulock 1515. Superb glossy dark green patina. Good very fine. From a European private collection
Gergis, near the site of ancient Troy, was said to be the birthplace of the famous Sibyl Herophile whose idealized portrait appears on the obverse (the seated sphinx on the reverse is a symbol of prophecy). She would have predicted the fall of Troy, the rise of Alexander the Great and even the birth of Jesus.
