The ancient Greeks believed that 'daric' was derived from the name of the Great King Darius, who was believed to have introduced this coin. Because of their type, they were often nicknamed 'archers'; whence the saying of Agesilaus that he had been driven from Asia by 30.000 archers... such was the price of the Persians bribery of Athens and Thebes.
