Hupeh. Kuang-hsü "Large Characters" Tael Year 30 (1904) MS63 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y128.1, L&M-181, Kann-933. Large Characters type. An astounding representative of this rare provincial issue, which ranks among the finest seen by the grading services to-date. A survey of records demonstrates the level of attention accorded to the type in even lower grades, with even circulated "Details" examples having sold in excess of $20,000. This offering, with its sublimely mint "fresh" fields, studded with light die polish lines and flanking designs rendered to exact calculation, reveals a degree of visual appeal and charm that places it into an elite tier, currently exceeded by only a single example seen by PCGS and two by NGC. Of these, only one certifies at the gem level, with none exceeding that mark. An elite cabinet piece, and one of the indisputable highlights of this auction.
