Hupeh. Kuang-hsü "Small Characters" Tael Year 30 (1904) AU53 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y128.2, L&M-180, Kann-933, WS-0878, Wenchao-583. Small characters variety. A contested and short-lived issue, introduced as part of a projected coinage reform based on the traditional system of Chinese weights, rather than the relatively recently introduced decimalized Dollar system. However, the type ultimately met with opposition due to the difficulty and cumbersomeness of converting between the two different monetary units. While not quite as scarce as its large characters cousin, the present specimen has to its credit a truly singular eye appeal created by a rainbow of peripheral iridescence--a notably distinguishable feature for this often only very lightly toned series.
