Hsüan-t'ung silver Specimen Pattern "Long-Whiskered Dragon" Dollar Year 3 (1911) SP61 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn305, Kann-223a, L&M-28, WS-0040, Wenchao-105 (rarity 3 stars), Chang Foundation-33. Pointed petals variety. Perhaps the most instantly recognizable proposed pattern for the final dragon dollar of Hsüan-t'ung's reign, stemming from a program by the Emperor to unify the national currency that employed an Italian die-cutting firm to work with the Central Mint in designing a new dollar coin. Delicately patinated across the surfaces with a medallic strike rendering an exquisite level of detail, and few of the pesky hairlines that so often plague the type, this charming specimen expresses a clarity often missing from even finer examples. One of just 20 pieces of this variety that have been certified by PCGS to-date, it remains a necessary emission from the late imperial series so often missing from even advanced collections.
