Hsüan-t'ung silver Specimen Pattern "Reversed Dragon" Dollar Year 3 (1911) AU Details (Tooled) PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn308, L&M-31, Kann-225, WS-0042A, Wenchao-115 (rarity 3 stars), Chang Foundation-37. Reversed dragon. Type II variety with raised veins on leaves. An excessively rare proposed pattern for the final dollar type of the Qing Dynasty, representing likely the only comparatively "attainable" design from this pattern series. Engraved with the dragon's body reversed, or oriented in the opposite direction, from the adopted design, this is only the third example we have ever offered. Despite the usually rather negative connotations of the tooled designation, here it appears to apply to a few confined patches of relatively light scratches on the the obverse and reverse, none of which seem to be aimed at an artificial strengthening of the devices. On the whole, the offering is rather matte in overall appearance, with charcoal toning obscuring the coin's few flaws.
