Republic bronze Pattern "L. Giorgi" Cent (20 Cash) Year 5 (1916) MS63 Red and Brown NGC, KM-Pn41, CCC-680, CL-MG.54, Duan-3224, Hsu-555. Among the rarest copper patterns of the early Republican series--entirely missing from the Norman Jacobs, Irving Goodman, and Kann collections. Produced by the Tientsin mint's chief engraver Luigi Giorgi, most famously know for his iconic pattern dollar series of President Yuan Shih-kai, this issue represents the officially adopted design, with the addition of the artist's signature just to the right of 6 o'clock on the reverse, as holdered. One of just 10 reportedly certified between NGC and PCGS combined, it is only the fourth we have been able to locate coming to auction in the past 2 decades, including the Wa She Wong example sold in 2010 (MS64 Brown), a second piece offered in 2014 (MS63 Brown), and most recently the Aki Tomo example sold in 2016 (SP64 Brown). Possessing rich cupric undertones, the specimen at hand stands out among the majority of those pieces for having retained a significant degree of its original mint red color, omitting even the smallest of stray marks from the surfaces with die polish lining the central reverse cartouche. Of immense significance for the serious Chinese numismatist, and perhaps the only opportunity to obtain an example for many years to come.
