Republic Yuan Shih-kai silver Pattern "Plumed Hat - Hat Touches Rim" Dollar ND (1916) MS63 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn52, L&M-945, Kann-664a, WS-0096, Wenchao-1101 (rarity 2 stars). Variety with tall plume on hat that nearly touches the rim. Struck to commemorate the elevation of Yuan Shih-kai as Emperor Hung-hsien. A fantastic rarity within the famed "Plumed Hat" series, and undoubtedly one of the most fiercely contested issues of Yuan Shih-kai, presented here in an astounding Choice Mint State condition and managing to stave off 9 of the other 10 certified examples between NGC and PCGS, with just one ranking a point finer. Displaying the whirl of die polish lines in the fields characteristic of the type, this is an emission which seasoned collectors will recognize seldom becomes available at auction, with this same coin being the last that we can locate becoming available, bringing $33,460 in our December 2016 Hong Kong sale.
