French Colony silver Proof Essai Piastre 19___ (1931) PR67NGC, Paris mint, KM-Unl., VG-5307, Maz-Unl., Gad-35, Lec-276. Reeded edge, Coin rotation. By Barre. Simply astonishing--a virtually immaculate rendition of this extremely rare and highly sought-after pattern. Already boasting an extraordinarily high technical grade, a full 5 grade points above the next finest at NGC, and 2 grade points above the next finest at PCGS, the coin at hand adds yet further acclaim to its unchallenged status with a star designation for stunning eye-appeal, clearly well-warranted by its teal, merlot, and goldfish orange toning palette contrasted against icy white fields. Posited by most reference works to have been produced for the 6-month-long Colonial Exposition (Exposition coloniale internationale) in Paris in 1931, we note that in his most recent work, Monnaies et Jetons de L'Indochine française, Jean Lecompte has reassigned it a date of 1920, though he provides no explanation for this revision. We have handled only other 2 examples of this essai, the finest being a SP63 piece certified by PCGS, which brought $12,925 in our January 2014 New York sale (lot 23609). With the present offering ranking 4 points ahead of that specimen, and almost certainly representing the finest known, we can only expect that it will be met with fierce competition as it crosses the auction block.
